Providing Braces for Children and Adults in Charlotte, NC

Eating with Braces

What can you eat? Pretty much anything you'd like! There is a small list of foods we ask that you avoid which are listed below. You may notice that with certain types of appliances or bite blocks that it is difficult to chew for the first few days. Don't worry, it won't take long and you will figure out how to enjoy your favorite foods again!

Foods to Avoid
  • Sticky foods: taffy, Starburst, Skittles, Now & Laters, etc.
  • Hard foods: ice, beef jerky, Jolly Ranchers, frozen candy bars, etc.
  • Please avoid playing with your braces, chewing on pens, pencils or fingernails

General Soreness

When you first get your braces, or have an adjustment, your teeth may be sore for a few days. With the Damon System, soreness should be limited because of the extremely light forces we use. You may want to take an anti-inflammatory like Motrin until you are comfortable. Rinsing with warm salt water may help as well. Some patients report that chewing a stick of gum (yes this is OK) after an adjustment helps to neutralize discomfort.

Loose Wire or Bracket

Don't be alarmed if a wire or bracket comes loose. This may happen occasionally. If a wire is poking your cheeks or gums, you may use wax to cover it or you can even cut it to alleviate discomfort. Call the office and let us know what has happened. We will appoint you to come in if necessary. If this should happen after hours, please call our regular telephone number. There will be a message where you can reach Dr. Sellers or a staff member.

Care of Appliances

To successfully complete the treatment plan, the patient must work together with the orthodontist. If the patient has been asked to wear rubber bands, they must be worn consistently for them to work properly. With your partnership, we should be able to complete your treatment within the estimated time!

Brushing

It's more important than ever to keep your teeth sparkling clean and continue your regular cleanings with your general dentist! You will be given instructions on how to clean your braces. Please don't hesitate to ask questions! We want your smile to be the best it can be when your braces come off!

Athletics

If you play sports, protective mouthguards are available at the front desk. We ask that you not use the type you boil. In case of an accident involving injury to the face, check your mouth and appliances to see if your braces or teeth are loose. Please call the office immediately or contact your general dentist if this occurs.
